What is a DOT Annual Inspection?
Federal regulation 49 CFR § 396.17 requires every commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operating in interstate commerce to receive a complete annual periodic inspection — commonly called the "DOT annual" or "annual federal".
The inspection covers 13 categories and roughly 70 line items defined by 49 CFR § 396, Appendix G: brakes, steering, lights, suspension, frame, fuel system, exhaust, tires + wheels, wipers, coupling devices, body, and emergency exits.
Inspectors must be qualified per 49 CFR § 396.19. A signed inspection report (DVIR) is issued on completion; the owner retains it for at least 14 months. CMVs without a current DOT annual cannot legally be operated.
